: : : Anybody out there use the Zomax brand of speakers... what are your thoughts, fellings on them if you have.

: : Hi Tim,

: : Sorry for the late response but I had problems with my email yesterday.
: : The Zomax are a great value. I own the 2426 1" and 2445 2" drivers as well as the 2242 18" drivers. I have been using them for about two years. I am running the Viking Audio cabinets (MCW-18's and MCW-2's). The drivers sound great and are very well built. I think the price vs. performance is hard to beat. My cabinets were loaded with JBL 2241's before the Zomax and I have had no regrets with the Zomax.
: : The only thing you need to be aware of is the frame of the 18" drivers are a little larger than standard and they only use six bolt holes instead of the standard eight. I had to enlarge the holes in my cabinets by about one sixteenth in order for the drivers to fit properly. In my opinion, it was well worth the effort.
: : Please let me know if you need further information.

: Thanx Chuck, I m using the Zomax right now also, but i blew one of my 18s and one of my 15s this last weekend, not sure why, i also use the viking x215s with 2 400 w zomax 15s and the zomax 2445 in each.
: so is a lil weird that the 2nd speaker inline on my 15 blew at some point, no hard drops of cabs, 1st inline works and sounds great.

: are you also using the E&W amps?
: i like those too. but i did purchase 4 jbl 15s to replace all four of my Zomax 15s. like the sound and they seem pretty capible, but.... figured id use JBLs for the main fact the Vikings are designed for jbls.

Hi Tim,

I'm not sure why you would blow one speaker and not the other one beside it. I have been using the Zomax for a couple of years now and I have had not one problem with the speakers. In my setup I aux drive my subs, I use a low cut filter and I run my signal through one side of a dbx 166 for limit protection. I do run the E&W amps, four 2000's and two 1000's, and I love them. One thing you need to make sure of with the E&W's is that you don't hard clip them. An occasional flicker of the clip light is okay but don't light them up consistently.
The Viking cabs are a great product and the X-215's are really nice. I have been using JBL 4731X's for the past three years but recently changed over to the Viking MCW-2's. The change in sound quality was dramatic. That horn load cabinet is the most articulate thing I have heard. I was totally blown away by the vocal clarity. I am so happy with them that I have my 4731's for sale.
I am curious as to why you would buy the JBL's instead of reconing your Zomax. The recone kits are very inexpensive and reconing is really not hard as long as you have a little patience. Food for thought in the future as I know how much JBL drivers run. Also, contact Michael at Viking if you want some recommendations on drivers for his cabinets. Although he designed his cabinets around JBL he has tested many different drivers and he can enlighten you on their performance with his cabs.

Good luck with the rig, let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Chuck
