I've recently aquired a Sennheiser ME20 mic (capsule on K3U power module) ...Has anyone had experience with this mic or am I wasting my time using it?
Hi, Mark -
Not a waste at all—it's a good quality microphone, decent sounding and relatively rugged.
Similar in concept to AKG's C451/C460 line, the K3U preamps could be fitted with a variety of capsules, including an omni (your ME20), a cardioid (ME40), a short shotgun (ME80), and a number of lavaliers.
Not sure when they originated, but I started using them in the early 80's, and they weren't new then. I often had a choice of selecting either a ME40 or 451, and frequently preferred the ME40 due to its lack of a hyped high end response.
It's a worthy addition to your mic kit, useful wherever you might want an omni condensor (drum overhead, for ex.). Some alternative capsules would give you an even more versatile purchase.
