NO AMPLIFED SOUND!?
We were doing a small, yearly festival in a parking lot by the beach
in Port Hueneme, California, and one of my guys couldn’t resist
taking this picture. We had surf bands, rock bands, country bands...
You name it for two days, and it was sponsored by the city. D’oh!
All the best,

A TOTAL GEAR-HEAD!
This was in 1972. I worked with a high school friend at a company called
Steamer Sound. We made guitar and PA speakers mostly, but also did sound
jobs. The one shown here was also being taped for radio broadcast.
The black box the one guy is wearing is my attempt at an “isolation
booth” - it had a three-layer window, a pair of fans to bring in
air, and hatchways to reach in and adjust the headphones. This allowed
two separate mixes.

Pictured left to right: Jim
Hattis, the keyboard player of our band; Me (Tom Danley), at the
mix board with the headphones; Gordon Kapes, wearing the box (and
being crushed under the weight); and T.C. Furlong, a friend from
high school and the fellow I worked for at Steamer.
Cheers,
